Our Story: Redefining the Wedding Industry
What started as a simple question—"Where are the Black brides?"—evolved into a revolutionary force that transformed the wedding industry forever. In 2010, Jacqueline and Chike Nwobu, a husband-and-wife team with science and technology backgrounds, took a leap of faith that would change countless lives.
The Beginning: From Lab Coats and Network Servers to Love Stories
Jacqueline Nwobu, armed with a B.S. in Medical Technology and experience at Johnson & Johnson, and her husband Chike Nwobu, a Senior Network Analyst at ADP, noticed something striking: the complete absence of Black brides in mainstream wedding magazines. Together, they shared a vision of creating something unprecedented in the industry.
Their journey began in 2008 as wedding photographers, where they witnessed firsthand the void in multicultural wedding representation. Despite having no publishing experience, they were driven by a powerful mission: to create the magazine they wished existed.
Breaking Barriers
In January 2010, Munaluchi Bride Magazine launched, becoming the first nationally distributed wedding magazine celebrating Black love and multicultural weddings. Within months, the magazine graced the shelves of major retailers including Target and Barnes & Noble—a testament to both the market's hunger for representation and the Nwobus' unwavering determination.
Growth & Innovation
Under Chike's leadership as President, Munaluchi expanded beyond print media, forming strategic partnerships with media giants including AOL, Huffington Post, Ebony Magazine, and TheRoot.com. What began as a magazine evolved into a global multimedia platform serving the $200 billion international wedding and events industry.
More Than a Magazine
Jacqueline's powerful message, shared in her TEDxEuston talk, resonates through every aspect of Munaluchi: "Images are very powerful." This belief drives our mission to showcase the beauty, elegance, and diversity of multicultural weddings, inspiring future generations to see themselves represented in celebrations of love.
Our Impact
Today, Munaluchi stands as the leading voice in multicultural weddings, serving the 25% of weddings that take place in the multicultural space. We've also created platforms like The Coterie Retreat, an international wedding industry conference, empowering professionals across the globe and MunaMommy, a modern publication providing resources and inspiration to historically underserved moms.
